CANopen or Modbus? Motor Drive Communication Protocols
To integrate a motor drive with a PLC, host controller or higher-level system, you need a communication protocol. The two most common are CANopen and Modbus. Which is right for you?
Why Communication Matters
Communication lets you send speed/torque commands to the drive, read status and fault data, and tune parameters remotely. This link is critical for automation, fleet management and safety.
Modbus
Modbus (RTU, over RS232/RS485) is the most common and simplest protocol in industry. It is easy to set up and has very broad PLC support. Ideal for medium-speed, centrally managed systems and general automation.
CANopen
CANopen is a real-time, noise-resistant protocol built on the CAN bus. It is preferred for mobile vehicles (AGV, forklift, EV) and multi-node systems, offering deterministic timing and strong error handling.
Which to Choose?
- General automation, fixed plant, easy integration → Modbus
- Mobile vehicle, noisy environment, real-time control → CANopen
- If unsure: a drive that supports both gives you flexibility.
Most NES Drive TULPAR and BAMSI models support both Modbus (RS232/RS485) and CANopen, so they don't constrain your system architecture.
