What Is FOC (Field Oriented Control) and Why Does It Matter?

FOC (Field Oriented Control) is the modern control method that delivers the highest efficiency and the most precise torque control in brushless (BLDC/PMSM) and AC motors. It is the hallmark of high-performance motor drives.

What Is FOC?

FOC splits the motor stator current into two components: the torque-producing component and the magnetic-field component. The drive controls these two independently and in real time, so the motor draws exactly the current it needs at every rotation. The result: the right torque at the right moment, with minimum loss.

Difference from Scalar (V/f) Control

Simple scalar control only sets the voltage/frequency ratio and ignores the motor's instantaneous load, meaning weak torque and efficiency loss at low speeds. FOC knows the rotor position and steers current as a vector — delivering full torque even at low speed, with quiet, vibration-free operation.
